Everything you need to know if you are based in the Republic of Ireland

Through the EU Cross-Border Directive, you can choose to skip the queue and receive your knee or hip operation in Spain, one of the EU’s leading countries for orthopaedic surgery, with your medical costs reimbursed by the HSE.

You can apply if you:

  • Are ordinarily resident in Ireland
  • Are entitled to public healthcare
  • Have a GP or consultant referral 
  • Require a treatment that is publicly available in Ireland (e.g., hip or knee replacement)
  • Have a G-HIC/E-HIC and an in date valid passport.

Getting started is simple! Once you get in touch (by phone, email or our website), we’ll send you an information pack and guide you through a quick prequalification form. We will then review your medical info and help arrange any scans or documents needed.

Medical Review

Our medical team review your details to confirm you’re fit for surgery. Once approved, we’ll introduce you to the surgical team at Hospital Ochoa.

HSE Approval
Stage 3

HSE Approval

We help you complete and submit your HSE pre-approval form, so you can ensure you treatment costs are reimbursable.

Booking & Payment

Hospital Ochoa will send you an invoice. We will guide you through payment, financing options, and confirm all bookings.

Travel Preparation

We will arrange your flights, transfers, accommodation, and provide a full travel pack with all details before you go.

Surgery in Spain

You’ll have your surgery, recover comfortably with physio sessions, and stay with your chosen +1 for up to 12 days. Our local team are there to support you throughout your stay.

Recovery & Return

Our team will check in with you for wound care, physio follow-up, and recovery support. Once home you will have clinical and physio follow ups. This is to ensure your recover is progressing well, there is no discomfort, woundcare issues and mobilty is good.

Reimbursement & Feedback

We handle your HSE reimbursement paperwork and gather your feedback to keep improving our service.

What happens when you arrive in Spain?

Arrival

Patient will arrive in Spain and meet with our chaperone. We will arrange transport to the hotel.

Day 1: Pre-op

Chaperone will meet the patient at the hotel and bring them to their pre-op appointment in the hospital.

Day 2: Surgery

The patient has the option of staying in the hotel the night before or in the hospital. Your chaperone will assist if admission is morning of surgery.

Day 3

First day post-op. The patient will be an inpatient and receive physio.

Day 4

Second day post-op. The patient will be an inpatient and receive physio.

Day 5

Patient will be discharged to the hotel. Physio at hospital before arriving back to hotel. Chaperone could assist them back to the hotel.

Day 6

Patient will receive physio at the hospital. Chaperone may assist.

Day 7-8

Patient will receive physio at the hospital.

Day 9 – 11

Patient will recover in the hotel.

Day 12

Patient will return to ROI/NI. Transport will be arranged, chaperone will see them to the airport. At the airport, special assistance will assist them to their flight. Special assistance will meet them when flight arrives in ROI/NI.
