Everything you need to know if you are from Northern Ireland

Under the Waiting List Reimbursement Scheme, the Department of Health will reimburse those who are eligible.

An eligible patient will:

  • Decide that s/he wishes to access private treatment in ROI or wider EU.
  • Source the provider i.e. private clinic they plan to undergo their treatment/surgery.
  • Apply to the Department of Health’s National Contact Point Team for prior authorisation using form. 
  • Treatment is then arranged by the patient/carer.
  • Treatment is paid directly to the private provider by the patient.
  • Reimbursement is then sought from the Department of Health using the reimbursement form that will be issued to approved patients.

Applicants are asked to provide evidence in the form of a letter from a HSC Trust in Northern Ireland confirming their place on a treatment waiting list in addition to a Health and Care number to confirm GP registration and a National Insurance number.

What happens when you arrive in Spain?

Arrival

Patient will arrive in Spain and meet with our chaperone. We will arrange transport to the hotel.​

Day 1: Pre-op

Chaperone will meet the patient at the hotel and bring them to their pre-op appointment in the hospital

Day 2: Surgery

The patient has the option of staying in the hotel the night before or in the hospital. Your chaperone will assist if admission is morning of surgery.

Day 3

First day post-op. The patient will be an inpatient and receive physio.

Day 4

Second day post-op. The patient will be an inpatient and receive physio.

Day 5

Patient will be discharged to the hotel. Physio at hospital before arriving back to hotel. Chaperone could assist them back to the hotel.

Day 6

Patient will receive physio at the hospital. Chaperone may assist.

Day 7-8

Patient will receive physio at the hospital.

Day 9 – 11

Patient will recover in the hotel.

Day 12

Patient will return to ROI/NI. Transport will be arranged, chaperone will see them to the airport. At the airport, special assistance will assist them to their flight. Special assistance will meet them when flight arrives in ROI/NI.

Who is eligible from NI?

You can apply if you:

  • Are an ordinary resident of NI and entitled to the full range of HSC services.
  • Have been diagnosed by an HSC Trust consultant.
  • Have been on the HSCNI surgery waiting list for ≥1years.
  • Your surgery is one commissioned by DoH for their diagnosis and would have received within HSC under the same clinical circumstances.
  • Will pay for the surgery themselves THEN reclaim costs from DoH.
  • Have NOT sought any other source of reimbursement.
