Conditions treated:
- Symptomatic gallstones (biliary colic)
- Acute or chronic cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation)
- Gallstone complications (pancreatitis, jaundice due to bile duct stones)
Why surgery may be needed:
Persistent right upper abdominal pain, infections, jaundice, pancreatitis, or repeated attacks can significantly affect quality of life and carry risks if left untreated.
Surgical options:
- Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Keyhole) – Gold standard; small incisions, fast recovery, usually day case/short stay.
- Open Cholecystectomy – Reserved for complex cases (extensive inflammation, prior surgery, or anatomical challenges).
- Intra operative Cholangiography / CBD Exploration – If bile duct stones are suspected; may be combined with ERCP pre/post op as required.
Types of hernias treated:
- Inguinal & Femoral (groin)
- Umbilical & Epigastric (abdominal wall)
- Incisional (at previous surgical sites)
Why surgery may be needed:
To relieve pain, prevent enlargement, and reduce risks of incarceration or strangulation (a surgical emergency).
Surgical options:
- Open Mesh Repair – Very effective; local or general anaesthetic depending on case.
- Laparoscopic (TEP/TAPP) Repair – Keyhole approach; beneficial for bilateral or recurrent hernias and quicker recovery.
- Component Separation / Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction – For larger or recurrent incisional hernias.
Conditions treated:
- Severe, medication resistant gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GORD/GERD)
- Hiatus hernia (sliding or para oesophageal)
- Barrett’s oesophagus with selected indications (as part of a specialist plan)
- Benign gastric lesions, symptomatic polyps, or functional disorders requiring surgical correction
Why surgery may be needed:
When reflux or anatomical issues persist despite medication, cause complications (e.g., oesophagitis, aspiration), or significantly impair quality of life.
Surgical options:
- Laparoscopic Anti Reflux Surgery
- Nissen / Toupet fundoplication – Restores valve function to reduce reflux.
- Hiatal Hernia Repair – Hernia reduction, crural repair, with/without mesh reinforcement.
- Gastrectomy / Wedge Resection (Benign lesions) – Case-by-case after MDT review.
- Diagnostic/Therapeutic Endoscopy – As part of the pathway, where indicated.
Below is a clear overview of the most common procedures we provide, why surgery may be required, and the typical surgical options available.

- Diverticular disease with recurrent attacks or complications
- Haemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistula in ano
- Colonic polyps not suitable for endoscopic removal
- Rectal prolapse
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) – Selected benign surgical indications (case dependent)
Why surgery may be needed:
To relieve pain/bleeding, prevent recurrent infections, treat obstructive symptoms, or correct structural problems that don’t respond to conservative care.
Surgical options:
- Laparoscopic Colectomy / Segmental Resection – For complicated diverticulitis, refractory symptoms, or large non resectable polyps.
- Haemorrhoid Procedures
- Rubber Band Ligation (clinic)
- Haemorrhoidectomy (excisional)
